The origins of Valentine's Day

February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and Ancient Roman tradition.
While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of St. Valentine’s death which probably occurred around A.D. 270, it is also thought that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianise” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia.
Roots in an Ancient Roman Festival
Celebrated on the Ides of February, or February 15th, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Romulus and Remus (the twin founders of Rome) and was established to purify the city, as well as promoting health and fertility.
The Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity but in the 5th century it was outlawed by Pope Gelasius who declared February 14th as St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became so closely associated with love.
The start of a budding romance
During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed across Europe that February 14th was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance.
In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day became more and more popular in the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers across all classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by the 1900s, greetings cards began to replace written letters, as printed material became more popular.
Will you be my Valentine? Keep me posted!
Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings and nowadays, more than 25 million Valentine’s cards are sent in the UK alone.
